Several students at New Leaf Leadership Academy in Martinez got to participate in a national movement — one organism at a time — as part of the two-day BioBlitz event, with participating locations throughout the United States, as part of the year’s 100-year anniversary of the National Park Service. Just before 2 p.m. Pacific time, on May 20, 2,553 individuals had recorded 39,209 observations, identifying 5,436 species at 121 sites. “The exciting part of a blitz is that you have a lot of folks looking for biodiversity in a short period of time, and then capturing that picture,” said Martinez resident Elaine Jackson, who was there to identify native plants on Mount Wanda, including her first time spotting Rupertia, the California tea shrub, and relishing seeing a rare daytime sighting of soap root in bloom.
