Charles presents the West Coast debut of the project Thursday Feb. 28 at Kuumbwa Jazz Center and Friday at the SFJazz Center, where he’s been spending time lately as a recently minted member of the SFJazz Collective. Much like the Collective, the stellar Creole Soul sextet highlights the Caribbean currents woven into the foundational fabric of jazz, influences that are often minimized in historical accounts of jazz’s origins. Creole Soul includes Haitian-American alto saxophonist Godwin Louis, a rising force on the New York scene little heard in the Bay Area as yet; bassist Reuben Rogers, who hails from St. Thomas; and New Orleans pianist Sullivan Fortner, a recent Grammy Award winner for his collaboration with Cécile McLorin Salvant on “The Window” (Mack Avenue).
The camp was capped off July 29 with an awards ceremony, “It’s fun, and I got ballet hair bows, ballerina hair accessory, ballerina hair bow, pink ballet hair bow, ballet hair bows, over the top pink ballet to learn new things,” Marshall said July 28 during a brief respite on the Hayward campus, “I got to do new experiments that I haven’t done in school, and it’s better than school because school’s boring — no offense to my school,” she said with a smile, Girls Inc, program coordinator Shayna Whitley said the day camp for young women from eighth to 12th grade is part of an ongoing collaboration with Cal State and a five-year, year-round program intended to prepare girls for college..
“I fell in love with that kid instantly,” Rubino said. “He was the greatest kid in the world.”. Mike Rubino got emotional when he talked about Jake. He sat on the couch at his home, surrounded by pictures of his children, who are all adults now. After that first meeting with Jake in 2004 … “I need a minute,” Rubino said, covering his face. “He told his grandmother he made a new best friend,” Rubino said. Over the years, he developed relationships with most of his kids. He keeps in email contact with all of them. He hasn’t yet met five of them in person. Not all of them look like him, but a couple really do. Four of them are artists. He can tell you all their names without checking notes.
